UK challenge fails as European Court of Human Rights affirms global ban on torture
Amnesty International today welcomed the re-affirmation of the absolute prohibition of torture and other inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment in today's landmark ruling by the European Court of Human Rights in the case of Saadi v Italy.
The United Kingdom had intervened in the case in an attempt to persuade the European Court to change its long-established case-law on the absolute prohibition on torture and other ill-treatment. The Court rejected as "misconceived" the arguments advanced by the UK, with which the Italian government had agreed.
